Missouri Sinus Allergy Clinic - Thyroid Treatment

The Treatment of Low Thyroid

Proper thyroid function is essential for normal body metabolism. Thyroid disorders appear to be common in allergy patients, with diagnosis sometimes difficult to establish. Symptoms may include coolness, fatigue, hair loss, skin changes, recurring infections and depression, among others. Lab studies (blood work) can be helpful, although an individual may have low thyroid function even with normal lab work. Autoimmune thyroiditis is commonly found in allergy patients, with blood tests helpful.

What You Can Do

Monitor/document individual symptoms, including morning (basal) temperatures and pulse. If they are low, be suspicious. There is some disagreement regarding thyroid medications, with the most commonly prescribed type (Levothyroxine) requiring the body to convert it into an active form. Another option is Armour Thyroid®, which includes active hormone. Some practitioners consider a more desirable treatment.
