Missouri Sinus Allergy Clinic - Treatment For Snoring

Good Nasal Function Can Reduce Snoring

Restful sleep is critical for good health but is so commonly disturbed that abnormal sleep seems to be the norm. Sleep quality, or the lack thereof, can be directly related to a blocked nose, resulting from allergic swelling, anatomical narrowing or acid reflux with secondary tissue irritation. Snoring and sleep disturbed breathing is a serious issue in that it results in a reduced quality of life (poor rest). At worst, sleep apnea can cause related cardiac, blood pressure, daytime sleepiness and depression problems. Not all the effects of poor sleep are known. Good nasal function is a first step to a good night's sleep. The problem is made more difficult because the patient is often "used to it" and may not realize the severity of their sleep disturbance.

A home sleep video can help identify restlessness, snoring and mouth breathing. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale can help you understand the quality of your rest. A regular sleep schedule and exercise, with diet changes (avoid eating within several hours of bedtime) may be helpful. A sleep study (polysomnogram) is sometimes necessary, especially if obstructed breathing (sleep apnea) is suspected. A good night's sleep is one of the most important goals of this medical practice.
