This study underlines the importance of a women’s diet in the year before pregnancy. Most birth defects occur early in the pregnancy. Those eating more closly to a “mediterranean diet” and the U.S dietary guidelines we’re much less likely to have a birth with anencephaly (fatal brain defect) and cleft lip.
This is important because it underscores the importance of fruits, vegetables, seafood and healthy fats (olive oil). Keep a food diary and read food labels, aoid processed foods.
